Incompletes, leave and time limits for FIU nursing students
When a practicum cannot finish on schedule, three Florida International University (FIU) rules take over: the Incomplete policy, the Leave of Absence policy and the program time limits. Each has a hard edge: a two-term deadline on an Incomplete, a degree clock that a leave does not stop, and time limits that FIU's own graduate handbook states two different ways.

When an Incomplete fits a practicum
Under policy 380.0449 (revised August 19, 2025), FIU grants an IN grade only if half or less of the course work is outstanding and your work to date is passing. The graduate nursing handbook points students to this university policy.
In a practicum, the work that goes missing is usually clinical hours. A preceptor who withdraws late in the term, after most of your hours are logged and approved, leaves the kind of gap an Incomplete was built for. A preceptor who withdraws in the first weeks may leave more than half the work undone, and the policy then does not allow an IN at all.
An IN is not automatic. Your course faculty are the first people to ask whether your situation meets the policy, so raise it the moment a gap opens rather than in the last week of the term.
Finishing the remaining hours
Under the policy you complete the missing work without registering for the course again, and you have two consecutive terms, summer included, to do it. Anything still unfinished after that becomes an F, and an unresolved IN blocks your degree.

- Log on timeRecord each make-up day in Typhon NPST before a week passes so the finishing hours are accepted.

Leave of Absence
FIU's Leave of Absence policy, 380.048 (revised February 26, 2026), requires a leave when you will not register for three consecutive terms. You request it before the leave starts, and three people sign off: your program director or chair, the dean of the college, and the Graduate School's dean.
Leaves are generally granted for personal hardship or family need. They are not granted to fix academic standing, and conditionally admitted students are not eligible. Most important for planning, the degree clock keeps ticking during a leave, so the time limits below keep running while you are away.
For the MSN NP tracks, the program FAQ is blunter: no semester off, other than a Leave of Absence judged on its own facts. Because each course sits in a fixed semester of the plan, ask how a return would fit your sequence before you leave.
The handbook's enrollment-gap rule
The graduate nursing handbook adds a dismissal trigger of its own: not being enrolled in program courses for more than two consecutive semesters of your approved plan of study. The university's leave policy switches on at the same point, three consecutive terms without registration, but the two documents are written separately, and the handbook does not say whether an approved leave shields you from its dismissal rule.
The wording differs in a way that matters too. The university counts terms with no registration at all, while the handbook counts semesters without program courses, so a term with only an unrelated course would keep you clear of the university's leave requirement but still count as a gap under the handbook.
The safe course is to treat the nursing rule as binding. If you expect to be out of program courses for any term, talk to the Graduate Nursing Advisor first and put a leave request in writing before the gap begins.

Dropping a course: DR grades and withdrawal
Dropping is the other exit, and it follows the academic calendar. For 2026-27, the last day to drop a main-session course with a DR grade is November 2 in Fall, March 22 in Spring and June 28 for Summer Session C; the shorter sessions have their own dates on the academic calendar page.
A DR clears the course from your term but not from your plan, since the course still has to be completed later. In nursing it also carries a penalty: a repeat DR in one course is scored as a failure toward the dismissal limit, which grades and progression explains. For any question beyond the DR rule, check with the Graduate Nursing Advisor before you submit a drop.
Time limits: FIU's documents disagree
The 2025-2026 graduate handbook gives two sets of time limits in two different guidelines, and only one of them matches the university policy it cites.

Policy 380.080 lets some doctoral programs set shorter limits, which may account for part of the gap, but FIU does not say so. Plan to the shorter figure and ask your track program leader which applies. Time away has a second cost: the three pre-clinical courses (NGR 6002C, NGR 5141, NGR 6172) expire for clinical purposes after 3 years, so a long leave can force retakes.
Keeping a delay short
When a delay starts with a site, such as a preceptor who withdraws, a contract that is not signed in time, or a Summer term too short for the hours left, every FIU rule on this page gets easier to live with once a replacement preceptor is in place quickly.

Questions FIU students ask
Can I take a semester off from FIU's NP program?
Not as a simple break. The MSN FAQ allows no semester off except through a Leave of Absence granted case by case, and under the graduate handbook, going more than two consecutive plan semesters without program courses is grounds for dismissal. Talk to the Graduate Nursing Advisor before any gap.
Does a Leave of Absence pause my FIU time limit?
No. Policy 380.048 is explicit that time on leave still runs against the degree clock. The time you spend away counts against your program's time limit, and FIU's handbook gives those limits two ways: 4 or 6 years for the MSN and between 4 and 9 years for the DNP, depending on the guideline.
How long do I have to finish an Incomplete at FIU?
Policy 380.0449 gives you the next two consecutive terms, and summer counts as one of them. Work still open after that turns the IN into an F. You finish without registering for the course again, so agree a written completion plan with your course faculty as soon as the IN is recorded.
What is the time limit to finish FIU's MSN?
FIU's graduate handbook states it two ways. Its Dismissal Guideline gives the MSN 4 years, while its Degree Completion Timeline gives 6 years, matching university policy 380.080 for master's degrees. Until your program confirms which applies, plan to finish within 4 years and keep a Leave of Absence from eating into that window.
Can I graduate with an Incomplete still on my record?
No. Graduation waits until every IN is resolved, under FIU's Incomplete policy. If your final practicum ends with hours still missing, your degree waits until the work is finished and the grade is posted. For a Summer finish, that can mean moving past the August 7, 2027 conferral date to a later one.
