Contact the placement desk
Use the message form on this page to reach the placement desk about your Florida International University (FIU) clinical placement. Five details, your track, the practicum course, your city, the semester and any hours still owed, let your placement advisor start the right search in the first reply rather than after a round of questions.
Send the placement desk a message
Your FIU track, practicum course, city and start semester help most. Add anything else in the message box.

What to include in your message
The five details that shape your search
- Your track. Online AGPCNP or PNP, a post-graduate certificate, the post-BSN or post-MSN DNP, a hybrid NP track or the RN to BSN. It tells us whether FIU expects you to identify the site and what kind of preceptor fits.
- The NGR course.
NGR 6201L,NGR 6301L,NGR 7940Cor whichever practicum comes next. Each course points to its own patient population, and the number goes on your Preceptor Request Form. - Your city or county. Include how far you can drive. Online-track students can look beyond FIU's four South Florida home counties, so say if another part of Florida works for you.
- The starting semester. Spring 2027, Summer 2027 or later. FIU arranges rotations in the term before, and the date shows how much contract time remains.
- Hours still needed. If you are mid-rotation or finishing an Incomplete, give the target from your syllabus or course faculty and the hours already approved in Typhon.
Not sure of a detail? Choose "Not sure yet" as your program, and your advisor will help you read your plan of study.
Details that speed things up
A few extra lines save days of back-and-forth. Name the practices you have already approached and what each said, so the search starts somewhere new. If you know of a practice with an existing FIU contract, mention it, since that skips the longest wait. Tell us where you work and on which unit, because FIU does not allow hours on your own unit, and list the weekdays you can be on site, since primary care rotations run Monday to Friday during office hours.
Keep the first message to these placement facts. Your advisor will ask for anything more, such as your clearance timing, at the point it matters.
What happens after you send it
- Your advisor repliesA placement advisor reads your message and answers with any questions about your course, area or dates, and the timeline your practicum needs.
- You agree the planA short conversation settles where to search, which kind of practice fits the course, and what shapes your quote. The cost page explains those factors in advance.
- The search runsWe contact practices suited to your course and area, vet every clinician for FIU's requirements and learn each practice's FIU contract status on first contact.
- You meet the preceptorYou are introduced to a preceptor who has agreed, with the details your Preceptor Request Form needs ready for your faculty's signature.
- FIU reviews and approvesYou submit the request, and FIU's faculty and clinical education office then approve the preceptor and confirm the contract before your first clinical day.
The full sequence, with what you do at each stage, is on how it works.
If your practicum is close or already running
Put the date in your first line. A start within about eight weeks changes the plan, because a new site contract takes 6-8 weeks by FIU's current handbook, so we lead with practices that already hold an FIU agreement. Need a preceptor fast explains how that search works.
If a preceptor has just withdrawn, say how many hours are approved and when your last clinical day was, and read preceptor dropped out for the steps to take with FIU the same day. Students running behind on hours late in a term should give the hours owed and the date the term ends.
Questions that belong with FIU
Some answers only FIU can give, and asking the right office early saves time. Send those questions from your FIU account, which FIU treats as its official channel.
| Question | Who at FIU answers it |
|---|---|
| Which clinical-hour total applies to me, 770 or 630? | Your plan of study and course faculty |
| Can my site be outside Florida? | The Office of Clinical Education |
| Is my preceptor or site approved, and is the contract signed? | Your clinical faculty and the Office of Clinical Education |
| Why is a Typhon entry not approved? | Your clinical faculty |
| Incomplete, Leave of Absence or a revised plan | Your course faculty and the Graduate Nursing Advisor |
| Placement help on a hybrid track | The graduate nursing clinical coordinator |
Preceptors and practices
Clinicians interested in teaching an FIU nursing student are welcome to write in too: pick "I'm a preceptor (not a student)" in the program list and share your specialty, your practice location and the terms you could host a student. Precept an FIU student explains what FIU asks of its preceptors and what it offers in return, including ANCC preceptorship documentation after 120 hours.
Questions FIU students ask
How soon will the placement desk reply?
Messages land with the placement desk and are answered by a placement advisor, with the closest practicum start dates handled first. Putting your start semester, or the date a preceptor left, in the first line of the message helps the desk see how urgent your search is.
Can I reach you by chat instead of the form?
Yes. Any page's chat button connects you with the desk, which suits a quick question best. For a full placement request, the form is better, because it keeps your track, course, city and semester together for your advisor.
Do I need to know FIU's preceptor requirements before I write?
No. Checking each clinician against FIU's rules is part of our work: at least one year of practice in the field, current licensure, national board certification, and a Florida license for any Florida site. Send your track and course, and your advisor applies the rules that fit your program.
Does FIU see what I send you?
Your message comes to us, and we handle it as our privacy policy describes. What reaches FIU is up to you: you submit the Preceptor Request Form yourself, and FIU's reviewers take it from there.
What if I am not sure which course comes next?
Choose "Not sure yet" on the form and tell us your track and the semester you are in. Your plan of study lists the practicum for each term, and your advisor can help you read it. Your course faculty and the Graduate Nursing Advisor confirm it at FIU.
