Typhon NPST at FIU: the 7-day rule and the time sheet
Florida International University (FIU) has every graduate nursing student record clinical encounters in Typhon NPST (Nurse Practitioner Student Tracking). Miss the 7-day window and FIU rejects the entry, and you redo those hours. Your preceptor signs off on documentation at the site, faculty then sign off in Typhon, and a signed Clinical Rotation Time-Sheet Log runs alongside.

What Typhon NPST does at FIU
Typhon NPST is FIU's clinical record for graduate nursing. The graduate handbook says all students use it, with an entry for every patient encounter in a rotation. Those entries are FIU's evidence that your hours happened and of what you did in them. It sits alongside Canvas, my.fiu.edu and Complio in the set of FIU student systems you will use every week.
FIU's 2022 preceptor manual also describes Typhon as the home of the NWCNHS approved list of preceptors, and it mentions timecards approved in the system. The Preceptor Request Form has a box to tick when your preceptor is already on that approved list, so ask a prospective preceptor whether they have taught FIU students before. The Preceptor Request Form page covers the rest of the form.
The 7-day rule
FIU's graduate handbook is strict here. Typhon entries are due within 7 days, entries not completed in that window are not accepted, and the hours they cover must be redone. One busy week without logging can wipe out several clinical days that you then have to schedule again with your preceptor.
The safe habit is to log each clinical day the same evening, while the patients are fresh. Keep brief de-identified notes during the day so the entry takes minutes, and treat a late shift or a long weekend as a reason to log sooner rather than later. Set a recurring reminder for the evening of every clinical day.
Past day seven, Typhon entries are refused under FIU's handbook and the hours behind them have to be worked again. Log each clinical day the same evening.
Who approves what
Approval runs in two stages, and a paper record backs both of them. Knowing the order helps you spot where an entry is stuck when your hour total in Typhon looks lower than the days you have worked.
- You enter the encountersRecord each patient encounter in Typhon NPST within 7 days of the clinical day.
- Your preceptor approves on siteFIU's graduate handbook has the preceptor approve your documentation at the site, so review it with them while the day is recent.
- Faculty approve the Typhon entriesYour faculty then approve the entries in Typhon. If they question one, settle it with your clinical faculty straight away.
- The time sheet confirms the hoursYour preceptor's signature on the time-sheet log, added each day or each week, gives FIU a paper record that matches your Typhon hours.
The Clinical Rotation Time-Sheet Log
Alongside Typhon, FIU's 2022 preceptor manual has you hand the preceptor the approved time-sheet log in the manual's Appendix D, the Clinical Rotation Time-Sheet Log, for a signature every day or every week. The manual says plainly that preceptors must not pre-sign it. A sheet signed ahead of time for days not yet worked records nothing real and puts the preceptor in an awkward position.
Keep the sheet and Typhon in step. If the sheet shows eight hours on a Tuesday, the Typhon encounters for that Tuesday should describe the same day. Scan each signed page as soon as you have it; together with the approved entries, those pages document your hours for the rotation. Keep the originals safe until your final practicum grade is posted.
What counts toward your hours
Not every hour spent at a site counts. FIU's graduate handbook keeps observation of hospital rounds to a minimum and leaves it out of practicum hours altogether. Hours also belong inside official semester periods, and any clinical day in a campus break has to be cleared by your faculty over email in advance.
FIU's totals are themselves in dispute. The MSN web pages give 770 clinical hours for the NP tracks, while the 2025-2026 graduate handbook gives a 630-hour minimum for AGPCNP, PNP, PMHNP and AGACNP, and FIU publishes no hour split for the individual primary care practicum courses. Ask your course faculty what your practicum requires. The 770 versus 630 hours page sets out the conflict, and the clinical hours page covers every program.
When hours go missing
Under FIU's rules, hours drop out of your record in three common ways: an entry logged after 7 days, a clinical day you missed, or an official holiday that fell on a scheduled day. Missed hours are owed back, and a holiday is replaced by a day you arrange with your preceptor. Each one pushes the end of the rotation a little later in the term.
If you fall far behind near the end of a semester, FIU's Incomplete policy (380.0449) is narrow: you must be passing otherwise and missing half the work or less, and whatever remains has to be done inside two consecutive terms, summer included. Talk to your clinical faculty early, and read behind on clinical hours for the practical options.
Why FIU students keep clean logs with us
We brief every preceptor we place on FIU's paperwork before day one: approving your documentation on site, signing the time-sheet log each day or week for days already worked, and completing the mid-rotation and final evaluations. A preceptor who knows the routine keeps your record moving, and one who has signed the time sheet at the end of every week rarely leaves you chasing signatures at the end of the term.
We keep the 7-day rule in view with you through the rotation, and if a preceptor leaves mid-semester we start on a replacement at once so your hours keep building. Your faculty and the Office of Clinical Education decide on every site and preceptor, and we make their review easy with a request that is complete and built to FIU's rules. Questions FIU students ask
How long do I have to log clinical hours in Typhon at FIU?
Seven days. Under FIU's graduate handbook, a Typhon NPST entry has to be finished inside a week of the clinical day; anything later is refused, and the hours behind it have to be repeated. Logging each clinical day the same evening keeps you well inside the window, even in a heavy week.
Can my preceptor sign my FIU time sheet in advance?
No. FIU's 2022 preceptor manual says preceptors must not pre-sign the Clinical Rotation Time-Sheet Log, which is Appendix D of the manual. Signatures go on daily or weekly, covering days already worked, so bring the sheet to each clinical day, or at the very least to the last clinical day of each week.
Who approves my Typhon entries at FIU?
Two people, in order. FIU's graduate handbook says your preceptor approves your documentation at the site, and your faculty approve the Typhon entries. If faculty question an entry, resolve it with your clinical faculty quickly, since the 7-day window keeps running for every new clinical day you log.
Do observation hours count in Typhon at FIU?
Not for hospital rounds. FIU's graduate handbook allows only minimal observation of rounds and gives it no credit toward practicum hours. Build your log from direct patient encounters with your preceptor, since each Typhon entry records an encounter you took part in rather than one you watched.
Is my preceptor already in FIU's Typhon system?
Possibly. FIU's 2022 preceptor manual refers to an NWCNHS approved list of preceptors kept in Typhon, and there is a checkbox on the Preceptor Request Form for anyone already listed. A preceptor who has taught FIU students before may be listed, and the Office of Clinical Education can confirm it.
