FIU's licensure disclosure: Florida meets, every other state not determined
Florida International University (FIU) says its licensure programs satisfy Florida's requirements and that, for every other state, it has not made a determination. Three nursing programs appear on that list: Nursing (BSN), Nursing (MSN) and the Doctor of Nursing Practice in Nurse Anesthesia. If you plan to be licensed outside Florida, FIU tells you to contact that state's licensing agency before you start.

What FIU's Professional Licensure page says
FIU keeps one university-wide Professional Licensure page for every program that can lead to a license, nursing included. The statement on it is short. Every FIU licensure program meets Florida's licensing requirements, and in FIU's words, "At this time, FIU has not determined if these programs meet the licensing requirements in every state."
The page then hands the next step to you: if you want a license somewhere other than Florida, check with that state's licensing agency before you begin. For nurses, that agency is the state board of nursing.
Just as telling is what the page leaves out. FIU publishes no state-by-state chart, marks no state as meeting or failing its requirements, names no state where it declines to enroll students, and shows no revision date. Florida is the one state FIU speaks for, which fits a college whose nursing programs are all approved by the Florida Board of Nursing and whose MSN and DNP admissions require a current Florida RN license.
Which nursing programs are on the list
The Nicole Wertheim College's nursing programs take up three entries on FIU's list. FIU lists each degree once and does not break the MSN out by specialty, so its Florida statement reads as covering the MSN as a whole.

The page also has an Online Degree Programs section, and no nursing program appears in it, even though the Adult-Gerontology and Pediatric Primary Care MSN tracks are predominantly online and the post-MSN DNP runs through FIU Online. That gap says nothing either way about online study; if it matters to your plans, ask FIU.
Reading "not determined" correctly
"Not determined" is neither a refusal nor an approval. It means FIU has made no finding about whether its curriculum satisfies a particular state's educational requirements for licensure. That state's board decides, and FIU asks you to go to the board first.
For a nurse practitioner student the question splits in two. One part is whether the state will license an FIU graduate as an advanced practice nurse. The other, which arrives sooner, is where you may do clinical hours. FIU lets its online primary care NP students work with preceptors beyond the four South Florida counties it has long used, yet nothing on its pages says whether that stretches across a state line. Questions to put to the other state's board of nursing
- Will it license a graduate of FIU's program, named as FIU names it on the licensure page?
- Must an out-of-state program get approval before its students do clinical hours in the state?
- Must your preceptor hold that state's license? Florida's own rule requires a Florida license for a preceptor supervising an NP student in Florida.
- Which national certification does it accept for your specialty?
Treat "not determined" as an open question, never as a yes. Get the other state's answer in writing before you build a clinical search there.
Programs with no line of their own
Three FIU nursing programs are missing from the list: the post-BSN to DNP with its AGPC, FNP, PNP and PMHNP specialties, the online post-MSN DNP, and the post-graduate NP certificates. For these, the page makes no Florida statement and no out-of-state statement.
Each gap raises its own question. The post-BSN to DNP awards the MSN after semester six so that students can sit for national certification; whether FIU treats that step as part of its Nursing (MSN) entry is one to put to your Graduate Nursing Advisor. The certificates exist for nurses seeking certification in another specialty, and in Florida a post-master's certificate plus national certification is a recognized route to APRN licensure, so the licensing stakes are real.
If a license or a clinical approval in another state depends on any of these programs, ask FIU and that state's board before you enroll, and again before you move.
SARA, California and the complaint route
Authorization to teach students who live in other states is a separate matter, and FIU Online covers it on its state authorization page. FIU takes part in NC-SARA by way of the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) compact, and FL-SARA authorizes and regulates Florida institutions. FIU Online says 49 of the 50 states are SARA members and that FIU holds its own approval to offer online programs in California. The NC-SARA directory lists FIU as a participant, not on provisional status.
That page cites the federal disclosure rule, 34 CFR 668.43, and says students are notified in writing if they change into a major that leads to licensure. Since January 2018, out-of-state distance students under SARA who have worked through FIU's grievance steps and the state's may take a non-instructional complaint to the FL-SARA PRDEC Council.
The two statements sit on different FIU pages and answer different questions. One concerns FIU teaching you where you live; the other concerns what FIU has determined about licensing requirements.
Where you live decides which disclosure applies

Your RN license is a separate requirement: FIU's MSN and DNP admit only students with a current Florida RN license, as our page on the Florida RN license explains, while the RN to BSN/MSN also accepts an enhanced multistate license. We ask what the Office of Clinical Education has told you about your state and build the search only where FIU has said a site there can work. Questions FIU students ask
Is FIU's online nurse practitioner program approved in my state?
FIU's Professional Licensure page says its licensure programs, Nursing (MSN) among them, meet Florida's requirements; for other states, FIU has made no determination. There is no state-by-state table. Contact your state's board of nursing before you start, and ask FIU's Office of Clinical Education whether you may do clinical hours there.
Does "not determined" mean I cannot be licensed outside Florida?
No. It means FIU has made no finding either way. Whether a state licenses an FIU graduate is that state's decision, which is why FIU tells students to check with the state's licensing agency before starting. Ask the board directly and keep its reply with your records.
Why is FIU's DNP missing from the licensure list?
Only three nursing entries appear on FIU's list: the BSN, the MSN and the nurse anesthesia DNP. The post-BSN to DNP, the post-MSN DNP and the post-graduate NP certificates have no entry, and FIU gives no reason. If a license depends on one of them, ask your Graduate Nursing Advisor and the other state's board.
Is FIU a SARA school?
Yes. FIU Online says FIU is an NC-SARA participant through SREB, with FL-SARA as the Florida authorizing body, and that it has separate approval for online programs in California. SARA concerns FIU's authorization to teach across state lines; the licensure page is where FIU states its position on licensing requirements.
