Need a preceptor fast for an FIU practicum
When a Florida International University (FIU) practicum is only weeks away, the site contract usually sets the pace more than the search does. A new agreement takes 6-8 weeks by the count in FIU's current graduate handbook, and no clinical day can happen before one is signed. For Spring 2027, which opens January 11, the longest figure lands on November 16, 2026. The academic calendar page runs the same count for every term through Fall 2027.
The fastest route FIU allows

What a late start does to your weekly schedule
Starting late does not shrink the hours; it squeezes them into fewer weeks. FIU publishes no per-course hours for the primary care practicums, so the target for this course comes from your syllabus and course faculty, while the program total reads 770 hours on FIU's web pages but only a 630-hour floor in the handbook, as 770 vs 630 hours explains.
Primary care rotations run Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., so catching up means a preceptor with open weekday capacity, not weekend shifts. A clinical day that lands on a university holiday is made up on a replacement day you arrange with the preceptor, and any day during spring break, March 1-7, 2027, needs your faculty's approval by email beforehand.
Summer is tighter still. FIU's full Summer 2027 session runs May 10 to July 30, and FIU does not state which session its practicums follow, so ask your course faculty early how many weeks you will actually have on site.
If the contract will not be ready in time
Raise it with your course faculty before the term starts, not after. They know what the course allows, whether a later start inside the term can still work, and which practices FIU already has agreements with. Waiting until the first clinical week leaves the fewest choices.
One common assumption is wrong: an Incomplete is not a fix for a rotation that never started. FIU's policy 380.0449 grants an IN only when no more than half the work is missing and the student is otherwise passing. If the practicum has to move to a later term, the knock-on effect reaches your whole plan of study, which delayed graduation walks through.
Whatever the timing, hold off on clinical days until FIU confirms approval and a signed contract. The graduate handbook counts an early start as unprofessional conduct, and a written warning costs more time than it saves.

Can FIU speed up a new clinical site contract?
FIU's documents give lead times rather than a rush option: the current graduate handbook plans on 6-8 weeks, the 2022 request form warns of as long as 6, and the 2022 manual's text asks for 8 weeks' notice or more. Ask the Office of Clinical Education what is possible for your term, and in the meantime put practices that already hold an FIU agreement first.
Can I start clinical hours before FIU signs the contract if the preceptor agrees?
No. FIU's Clinical Education page says no rotation can begin before the contract is in place, and the graduate handbook files an unapproved or uncontracted start under unprofessional conduct. Wait for FIU's confirmation, then log each day in Typhon within 7 days.
Can I do FIU clinical hours over winter break to catch up?
Only with approval. FIU's graduate handbook limits rotations to official semester periods and requires your faculty's approval by email, in advance, for clinical days during campus breaks. On the 2026-27 calendar, Fall ends December 12 and Spring opens January 11, so ask early if you hope to use any days in between.
