The FIU systems you use in a clinical semester

Florida International University (FIU) runs your nursing program through a handful of systems: FIU email and Canvas for official messages, MyFIU and PantherSoft for records, FIU SharePoint for syllabi, Typhon NPST for clinical logs, and Complio (called FIU Express on FIU's web pages) for clearance. Knowing which one holds what saves real time once a practicum starts. This page maps each system to the clinical job it does.

Two of these, Typhon and the clearance system, have guides of their own on this site. The rest are covered here because they carry the messages, records and documents a clinical semester depends on.

FIU email and Canvas: where official word arrives

Every FIU student gets an FIU email account, and the graduate handbook says all program communication goes to and from that account only. You are expected to check it every day. When a clinical coordinator needs a missing preceptor detail, or a site's onboarding steps come through FIU, this inbox is where they land, and a message left unread for a week can cost you a week of contract time.

Canvas, at canvas.fiu.edu, is FIU's learning management system, and the handbook lists it as an official communication channel as well. Course faculty post announcements, assignments and seminar material there, including anything tied to NGR 6743, the clinical education seminar before your first practicum. FIU Online runs FIU Canvas Help, with help articles, live chat and a request form, for when something breaks.

Treat the two as one stream. Read both on the same schedule, and reply to anything clinical from your FIU account so the thread stays on the record FIU uses.

MyFIU and PantherSoft: records and remediation

MyFIU, at my.fiu.edu, is the university portal linked from every fiu.edu page, and PantherSoft is the records system behind it. It is the home of your university record, and an older FIU nursing handbook sends students there for final grades. Drop and late-drop deadlines follow FIU's academic calendar, which is worth keeping open during a practicum semester.

For nursing students, one detail matters more than the rest. The graduate handbook routes remediation through the PantherSoft network (PSN): when clinical or course performance falls short, the notice and the plan the site and faculty write are filed there. That makes PantherSoft the record of a clinical problem, not just a place for grades.

If you ever receive a remediation plan, read it in full, note every date in it, and keep your Typhon entries and time sheets current while you work through it. The progression steps that can follow, from a written warning to clinical probation, are set out on our grades and progression page.

SharePoint syllabi and the forms FIU posts

FIU keeps MSN and DNP syllabi on FIU SharePoint, linked from the plan of study. Pull the syllabus for your practicum as soon as it posts: its course objectives and competencies belong in the folder you hand your preceptor at the first meeting.

Clinical forms live in two other places. FIU's 2022 preceptor manual for its Advanced Practice Nursing Programs carries three forms you will handle: Appendix A, the Preceptor Request Form; Appendix C, the preceptor evaluation form; and Appendix D, the Clinical Rotation Time-Sheet Log. The college's Clinicals & Fieldwork page posts college-wide forms, including:

  • Consent: the NWCNHS Student Consent Form for Clinical Placement
  • Health history: the NWCNHS History & Physical Form
  • TB: the NWCNHS TB Annual Screening Form, each year
  • Drug testing: the NWCNHS Drug Use and Clearance form
  • COVID: the AHC Health Clinical Placements COVID Acknowledgment

FIU also still hosts an MSN Clinical Student Evaluation Tool dated 2010. Where two versions of a form exist, use the one your course faculty point to in Canvas, and keep a copy of everything you submit.

Typhon NPST and your clearance account

Every patient encounter goes into Typhon NPST (Nurse Practitioner Student Tracking). Your preceptor signs off documentation on site, faculty sign off the entries, and an entry made after the 7-day window is refused, so the hours behind it have to be repeated. Typhon also holds the list of NWCNHS-approved preceptors that the Preceptor Request Form refers to, and the 2022 manual mentions timecards approved in Typhon. The full routine is in our Typhon guide.

For clearance, FIU's handbooks send you to Complio, run with American DataBank; its web pages use the name FIU Express instead. Whichever name your instructions use, that account holds the background check, drug test, immunization records, BLS card and one-time signed forms, all of which must be complete before a rotation starts. Each item and its renewal cycle is on the clinical clearance page.

Library, proctoring and help desks

FIU Libraries built a guide called Library Help for Online Nursing Students, kept by the Health Sciences Librarian, in which every resource works off campus. Alongside it sit a CINAHL guide, an Online Research Guide for Students and Ask Us chat with a librarian, and FIU Online links to Online Librarians as well. For a DNP project or an evidence-based assignment tied to your practicum, start with the nursing guide.

Some courses test through a university-approved online proctoring vendor that records video, audio and your screen; the course materials name the vendor. For technical trouble at any hour, AskIT, the Division of IT's portal at it.fiu.edu/askit, offers a knowledge base, a service catalog, technical help and system status around the clock.

RN to BSN students, as fully online undergraduates, can also work with FIU Online's Success Coaches. FIU describes no equivalent coaching for graduate students, so graduate questions go to your Graduate Nursing Advisor.

Where our work meets FIU's systems

Every official step of an FIU placement runs through FIU's own systems and people. The request form goes in under your name, the contract is the Office of Clinical Education's work, and faculty approve your Typhon entries. Our job is to make what you submit complete and correct before it ever reaches FIU.

In practice, we find the preceptor and assemble what the form asks for: the preceptor's name, practice, specialty, address, email and license, and your agreed clinic days and hours. We ask whether the preceptor has taught FIU students before, which tells you whether they may already be on Typhon's approved list, and we set your clearance renewals against the site's start date so nothing lapses mid-rotation. You file through FIU; we keep the search moving. Start through the contact form.

Questions FIU students ask

Which email does FIU nursing use for clinical placement messages?

Your FIU email account. The graduate handbook says all program communication goes to and from the FIU account only and that students must check it daily. Contract questions, preceptor details and onboarding steps arrive there, so answer clinical messages from that account and keep the whole thread in one place.

Where are FIU's MSN and DNP syllabi?

On FIU SharePoint, linked from the MSN plan of study. Download your practicum syllabus as soon as it posts, since its course objectives and competencies go into the preceptor folder you give your preceptor at the first meeting, along with your own learning objectives and faculty contacts.

Is FIU Express the same as Complio?

FIU uses both names and does not explain the difference. The handbooks describe a Complio account with American DataBank; the web pages refer to FIU Express. Follow whichever system your instructions point you to, and keep copies of every upload.

Does FIU use Canvas for nursing clinical courses?

Canvas is FIU's learning management system, and the graduate handbook lists it as an official communication channel. Clinical encounters are logged elsewhere, in Typhon NPST, within 7 days. For Canvas trouble, FIU Online's Canvas Help offers articles, live chat and a request form.

Who helps with FIU tech problems late at night?

AskIT, the Division of IT's self-service portal, runs 24/7 with a knowledge base, a service catalog, technical help and a system status page. Canvas-specific problems also have FIU Online's Canvas Help live chat, and library questions go to Ask Us chat or the online nursing library guide.

We check these pages against FIU's own graduate handbook, preceptor manual, plans of study, catalog and licensure pages. Your plan of study, your course faculty, your clinical faculty and FIU's Office of Clinical Education have the final word.

FIU asks you to identify your clinical site. We make that the easy part.

Tell us your FIU track, where you live and which semester your next practicum starts. We find preceptors whose patients fit the course, check early whether the site already holds an FIU contract, and prepare everything the Preceptor Request Form asks for.

  • Preceptors matched to the course: adult and older-adult primary care for NGR 6201L, pediatric primary care for NGR 6301L, an organizational mentor for NGR 7940C
  • Preceptor, facility, license and schedule details ready for the Preceptor Request Form, weeks ahead of the contract clock
  • Across Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and Monroe, or beyond them where FIU approves your site
