NGR 6201L: your first adult-gerontology primary care practicum at FIU
Clinical work in the Adult-Gerontology Primary Care NP track at Florida International University (FIU) begins with NGR 6201L, a practicum worth 4 credits that runs beside the NGR 6201 theory course in your second Fall. On the current calendar, a Fall 2026 section runs inside the term of August 24 to December 12, 2026, with finals from December 7 to 12, and Fall 2027 opens on August 23, 2027. FIU does not say whether practicums use the 16-week main session or the shorter A and B sessions, so take your course dates from the syllabus.
Two FIU descriptions of the sequence, and where they agree
FIU describes the adult-gerontology clinical sequence in two ways. FIU's newest plan, dated 5-2026 and in force from Spring 2027, gives three practicums, NGR 6201L, NGR 6202L and NGR 6203L, closing with NGR 6744. The 2025-2026 graduate handbook lists NGR 6201C/NGR 6201L and NGR 6202C/NGR 6202L as Advanced Adult-Gerontology Nursing I and II (theory and practicum), then NGR 6209 Clinical Decision Making in Adult-Gerontology Nursing and NGR 6700L Role Synthesis in Adult-Gerontology Practice.
For this first course, the two versions mostly line up: both open clinical work with a practicum numbered NGR 6201L. The theory course's suffix differs (NGR 6201 on the plan, NGR 6201C in the handbook), and what follows differs more, which matters when a preceptor asks how many semesters you may need them. If you started before Spring 2027, ask the Graduate Nursing Advisor which structure your cohort follows.
FIU lists no clinical-hour figure for NGR 6201L. Take the number from your own syllabus and course faculty, never from another school or a classmate's older syllabus.
The preceptor this course calls for
The course sits in adult and older-adult primary care, so look for a preceptor whose everyday panel is adults and older adults in a primary care setting. The handbook wants a year or more of practice in the specialty, plus a current license and a national certification, and it names nurse practitioners and physicians as preceptors, with most rotations spent alongside NPs.
A few limits shape the search. Family members and close friends are out, and so is your own work unit, though a separate department of a large hospital system can qualify. Florida's Board of Nursing rule adds that a preceptor supervising you in Florida must be licensed in Florida. Getting the site approved before the Fall
Setup happens in the Summer before, alongside the seminar covered on the NGR 6743 page. Because NGR 6201L is your first clinical course, this is also where the recency rule bites: your grades of B or higher in NGR 6172, NGR 5141 and NGR 6002C can be no more than three years old when it starts.
What the approval step involves
- The Preceptor Request Form, marked Clinical Practicum-I, naming the preceptor, facility, specialty, address and email, with your term, dates, days and times.
- A faculty signature on the form, after which FIU staff note when the site was last evaluated and log the preceptor's license number and expiration date.
- A contract if the site is new to FIU, which the current handbook puts at 6 to 8 weeks. Submitting a site is not a promise that FIU will contract with it.
- Clearance through Complio or FIU Express, finished before day one.

Your first weeks on site
Expect weekday clinic days, roughly nine to five, since that is the pattern FIU tells primary care students to plan around. Showing up over five minutes past your start time is logged as tardy and may see you sent away for the day. Your site may train you on its electronic health record and will hold you to its own policies.
Hand your preceptor the folder at the first meeting, fix your hours together before the practicum opens, and get the full schedule to your clinical faculty early in the clinical seminar. From the first patient, each Typhon NPST entry is due within 7 days, your Clinical Rotation Time-Sheet Log gets your preceptor's signature every day or every week, and you are evaluated halfway through and again at the finish. The 2022 manual has your clinical faculty watch you work on two or more separate clinical days, preceptor present; ask how that is handled if your site is far from Miami. One Fall rule to know now: during hurricanes, the handbook tells you to follow official university closures only, so watch FIU's own announcements.

Questions FIU students ask
How many clinical hours is NGR 6201L?
FIU does not publish an hour figure for NGR 6201L. The plan gives it 4 credits, and the whole program needs 770 hours by FIU's website or at least 630 by its handbook, with no published split across the three practicums. Your syllabus and course faculty give this semester's number; the hours hub shows the program figures.
Can I do NGR 6201L at the practice where I work?
Not on your own unit. The handbook does allow another unit when the employer is a large institution, and your preceptor cannot be a family member or close friend. Mention the connection to your clinical faculty when you submit the site, since they review your experience in approving a placement.
Can a physician precept me for NGR 6201L?
Yes. FIU's handbook and the MSN Clinical Education page name nurse practitioners and physicians as preceptors, though most rotations are with NPs. The same handbook says a master's in nursing is required, which FIU does not reconcile with the physician allowance, so have your clinical faculty confirm a physician preceptor before you submit the form.
Can NGR 6201L be done outside South Florida?
For the online track, yes. FIU allows AGPCNP clinicals beyond its four home counties of Monroe, Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach, as long as you identify the site and the contract is signed first. What if my preceptor cancels before the Fall starts?
Tell your clinical faculty straight away and put a new preceptor forward on a fresh Preceptor Request Form. A replacement at a practice FIU has already contracted with is the quickest route, because it skips the 6 to 8 week contract step. Our preceptor dropped out page walks through the recovery.
