Georgia and FIU nursing: licenses, clinicals and preceptors
Florida International University (FIU) has reached no determination on whether its nursing programs satisfy Georgia's licensing requirements, and its MSN admits only nurses holding a current Florida RN license. FIU's pages leave open whether an online-track student may log clinical hours at a Georgia practice, so the Office of Clinical Education comes first.

So a nurse living in Atlanta or Savannah has two gates to pass, and they open separately: FIU agreeing to a Georgia site, and Georgia's licensing rules. The licensure disclosure and learner location pages cover FIU's wording.
Georgia's rules for out-of-state NP programs
On program approval, Georgia stays out of the way. Georgia's Board of Nursing leaves graduate and other post-licensure programs, NP tracks included, unapproved and unregulated, so FIU would not need the Board's sign-off to send an MSN student to a Georgia clinic.
Licenses carry the weight instead. If you live in Georgia and log clinical hours there for an out-of-state school, your RN license must be Georgia's own or a multistate license another compact state issued. The Board puts anyone teaching or precepting in Georgia, on site or electronically, to that same license test. For APRN students, the Board adds that whoever gives the clinical instruction must be a nurse carrying APRN authorization from Georgia.
Plan any Georgia search around nurse practitioners who hold Georgia APRN authorization, since the Board wants NP clinical instruction there to come from one.
Practice in Georgia and where NP students look
Georgia sits in AANP's restricted category. An NP there needs a physician to delegate or supervise, and NPs face limits when prescribing Schedule II drugs, so a Georgia preceptor works under a different model from the protocol system on our Florida page.
The Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell metro, close to 6.5 million residents, is by far the state's largest. Augusta's metro spills into South Carolina, Columbus's into Alabama. NP students there search systems such as Northside Hospital, for instance, or Grady Health System, Piedmont Healthcare, Wellstar Health System and Emory Healthcare. Each decides for itself whether to take students, and none names FIU as a school it hosts.
Georgia's Preceptor Tax Incentive Program, which HB 144 revised and extended, pays its credit only for teaching students whose medical, dental, NP or PA program is a Georgia one. For a Georgia preceptor teaching an FIU student, that credit is off the table.
Licenses: Florida for FIU, Georgia or compact for Georgia
Georgia and Florida joined the Nurse Licensure Compact on the same day, January 19, 2018. FIU's MSN and DNP admissions still insist on a Florida RN license and leave unanswered whether a Georgia multistate license counts; the one FIU page naming a multistate license as acceptable is the RN to BSN/MSN. Past graduation, the APRN Compact is no shortcut either: Georgia has not enacted it and the compact has yet to start operating, so Georgia APRN authorization means a separate application to its Board.

Questions FIU students ask
Can I do my FIU nurse practitioner clinicals in Georgia?
No FIU page answers that. The Clinical Education page opens sites beyond South Florida to online AGPCNP and PNP students without mentioning other states, so write to the Office of Clinical Education before anything else. With FIU's yes, Georgia then expects a Georgia-issued or compact multistate RN license from you and a Georgia-authorized APRN leading your clinical teaching.
Must FIU get Georgia Board approval before I train in Georgia?
Not for graduate or other post-licensure study, which Georgia's Board neither approves nor regulates. The license tests for students, faculty and preceptors working in Georgia still apply. Pre-licensure students face a stricter line, because at present Georgia's Board approves no pre-licensure program that is online or based out of state for clinicals there.
Can my Georgia preceptor claim Georgia's tax credit for teaching me?
No. Georgia ties its credit to students enrolled in Georgia schools' programs in medicine, dentistry, NP or PA training, and an FIU student is enrolled in Miami. FIU's 2022 preceptor manual describes the recognition FIU offers instead, including ANCC preceptorship documentation.
I live in Georgia. Can I apply to FIU's online MSN with my Georgia license?
The MSN admissions page makes a Florida RN license a condition and tells applicants licensed elsewhere to obtain one before they are admitted. Whether a Georgia multistate license would do, given that both states belong to the compact, is not addressed. Put the question to FIU's nursing admissions office and save the written reply.
