Indiana residents weighing FIU: a light-touch board in a reduced practice state
Indiana's Board of Nursing accredits the in-state programs that prepare new RNs and LPNs and says outright that graduate programs, along with RN to BSN programs, fall beyond its review. That makes Florida International University (FIU) the deciding voice for an Indiana resident, and FIU's licensure page leaves Indiana undetermined, while its clinical pages never mention placements in other states.

A board with a narrow remit
The Indiana State Board of Nursing works through the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency. Its nursing education page defines the job tightly: accrediting programs operating in Indiana that lead to first licensure as an RN or LPN. RN to BSN programs and every graduate nursing program sit outside that job by the board's own description, and the rule defining eligible programs (848 IAC 1-2-4) mentions only prelicensure RN and PN education.
So Indiana's board adds no approval step for an FIU NP or RN to BSN rotation. The weight shifts to two other gatekeepers: FIU, which decides whether an out-of-state site is possible for your track, and the practice, which decides whether to host a student at all.

Indiana's compact participation began on July 1, 2020, two years after Florida's, and Indiana has stayed out of the APRN Compact. The Florida RN license page shows how FIU words its license rule for each program, and the licensure disclosure page covers what FIU's list includes.
Reduced practice and who precepts
Indiana NPs, AANP notes, work with a physician in a regulated collaborative arrangement that covers at least part of their practice. That arrangement shapes the NP's own license rather than FIU's preceptor rules, which look at experience, licensure and certification and accept physicians as well as NPs; see preceptor requirements.
Indianapolis-Carmel-Greenwood is the state's core metro, and Fort Wayne anchors a sizable metro of its own in the northeast. Parkview Health, Franciscan Health and Ascension St. Vincent join Indiana University Health and Community Health Network among the big names an Indiana NP student will meet early in any search. None of them is an FIU partner on the strength of this page; each has its own student policy, and FIU needs a contract with any site you propose.
Two metros that cross state lines
Roughly 281,000 Hoosiers live in the Indiana part of the Louisville/Jefferson County metro, while about 729,000 fall inside the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin metro's Indiana slice. For students in those corners, the closest practice may sit in another state.
When it does, that state's rules govern the rotation, not Indiana's. Across the river, Kentucky expects preceptors working in Kentucky settings for online APRN programs to hold a Kentucky APRN license, among other conditions covered on our Kentucky page. Can I take FIU's online RN to BSN while living in Indiana?
The RN to BSN/MSN is the FIU path that accepts a multistate license, and FIU advises seeking a preceptor within your own facility. FIU's 2021 information package adds that practicum requirements are not waived for students outside South Florida and wants students living in other states to tell the RN-BSN Program Coordinator so.
Will FIU accept an Indiana NP who practices under a collaborative agreement?
FIU's published preceptor rules center on a current license, national certification and at least twelve months of field experience, and none of them turns on a state's practice environment. Final approval of any preceptor belongs to FIU's faculty and clinical education staff, so present the NP's credentials in full.
How early should I start an Indiana preceptor search?
Earlier than a Miami classmate. FIU arranges each rotation during the term ahead of the clinical course, and a practice FIU has never used needs a contract that the current handbook says can take 6-8 weeks. Yes. FIU Policy 1370.001 ties you to the address you enrolled from until you report a new one, and it counts clinicals as educational activity tied to that location. Report the move, then get the clinical team's view on an Indiana site for the coming term.
