Florida International University (FIU) speaks for Florida only; for Maryland, its licensure page records no determination. Two Maryland features matter early. One Maryland rule already works in your favor. The state's higher education commission asks out-of-state colleges to register before teaching Marylanders online, except those approved under SARA (COMAR 13B.05.01.02), and FIU is an NC-SARA participant. Clinical training is the piece still undecided, and the Office of Clinical Education is where FIU decides whether it will sign with a Maryland clinic.
Maryland's rules for students in the clinic
Search the rules of the Maryland Board of Nursing (MBON) and you will find no approval step for outside schools whose students train in Maryland. Where the Board does discuss out-of-state programs, the subject is licensing their graduates: it keeps an equivalency assessment and publishes which prelicensure programs it has and has not accepted.
Two provisions still touch you. Under Health Occupations §8-301(d)(2), an APRN student enrolled in an accredited graduate program is exempt from licensure while doing advanced practice work inside that program. COMAR 10.27.01.03(B) deals with RNs working on a compact privilege, who practice in Maryland subject to Maryland law. A tax credit that makes the ask easier
Maryland pays preceptors back through its tax code. Tax-General §10-739 lets an NP or physician who takes NP students unpaid, in a preceptorship the Board has approved, claim a credit against Maryland income tax. Eligibility turns on volume and place: a minimum of three rotations, every one 90 hours or more, teaching in community settings that Maryland's health department has flagged as workforce shortage areas.
Credits are limited per person each year and by a statewide annual total, and the law runs until the end of June 2030. It is framed around students whose nursing program the Maryland Board recognizes, so a preceptor weighing an FIU rotation should check with the Department of Health first.
After graduation: the Board's program review
Planning to practice in Maryland? MBON states that it approves each NP program itself before certifying anyone who graduated from it. For a program not yet on its list, the school, not the graduate, submits a Program Approval Form. Ask FIU well before graduation whether it is listed or intends to file.
AANP rates Maryland as full practice, and new NPs declare a mentorship lasting a year and a half with a certified NP or a physician. Maryland entered the compact in January 2018 but has not taken up the APRN Compact, so advanced practice licensure stays separate in each state. Baltimore, the capital suburbs and beyond
Maryland's people cluster around Baltimore and in the suburbs of Washington, with Lexington Park and Hagerstown as smaller centers. Johns Hopkins Medicine and MedStar Health are two of the most familiar names; the University of Maryland Medical System, Luminis Health and LifeBridge Health also have a large footprint. Use them to orient your search, remembering that each writes its own rules for students. The same Department of Health that runs the tax credit maintains the shortage-area designations it depends on.

Questions FIU students ask
Can I train in Maryland as an FIU NP student?
That depends on FIU. The university's pages leave open whether online primary care students may use clinics in other states, and Maryland's Board adds no approval step of its own for outside schools. Put the question to the Office of Clinical Education before you reach out to Maryland practices.
Could I be certified as an NP in Maryland after FIU?
FIU has made no determination for Maryland. Maryland's Board approves NP programs one by one before certifying their graduates, and a program missing from its list has to be submitted by the school. Ask both FIU and MBON before you commit to the program.
Does Maryland reward preceptors who take NP students?
It can, through §10-739, for unpaid NPs and physicians in Board-approved preceptorships who finish a minimum of three community rotations, each running 90 hours or more, in flagged shortage areas. Credits are capped. Since the law is written around programs Maryland's Board recognizes, a preceptor should ask the Department of Health how an FIU rotation would be treated.
Is my Maryland multistate license enough for FIU?
Not on the face of FIU's pages. The MSN and DNP call for an active Florida RN license, which out-of-state applicants obtain before admission, and the multistate question goes unanswered. Ask FIU admissions directly before you apply.
