Missouri preceptors and FIU's online nursing programs
Missouri ties every nurse practitioner to a physician for an entire career, and that shapes who can precept you there. Florida International University (FIU) has confirmed its licensure programs for Florida only and made no call on Missouri, so the first answers you need come from FIU and from the Missouri State Board of Nursing.

Restricted practice and your preceptor
AANP files Missouri under restricted practice. Nurse practitioners there never outgrow the need for a physician collaborator, and each such arrangement carries limits on how many NPs a physician may work with, on chart review and on controlled substances. Every Missouri NP you ask to precept is working inside one of those arrangements.
The same structure brings physicians into view as possible preceptors. FIU's handbook asks for a master's in nursing yet also allows physicians to precept, and it notes that NPs supervise most rotations; the preceptor requirements page sets out that unresolved conflict. Get your course faculty's view before you build a list around physicians.
A preceptor tax credit that skips NPs
Missouri does reward some clinical teachers. Under RSMo 135.690, physicians and physician assistants licensed in Missouri can claim state income tax credits for unpaid teaching of medical or PA students in core primary care rotations, subject to a per-person yearly cap and a limit on how many credits the state issues each year.
Nursing is left out. The statute covers neither nurse practitioners nor nursing students, so precepting you brings a Missouri NP no credit, and a physician who takes an FIU NP student falls outside it as well. What FIU itself offers its preceptors is described on our preceptor recognition page.
Board rules and your license
Missouri's education rules (20 CSR 2200-2) are written for schools the Board itself approves. Nothing published asks an out-of-state school to register, apply or give notice when its students come to Missouri clinics. The licensure exemption in RSMo 335.081(6)(a), which covers supervised students in approved schools, never says whether a school from another state counts. A short written question to the Board settles it.
Missouri enacted the compact in 2017 (RSMo 335.360), with operations starting in January 2018. Florida is a member too, yet FIU's MSN and DNP still ask for a current Florida RN license, explained on our Florida RN license page. Missouri has not enacted the APRN Compact.
Two metros that cross state lines
St. Louis and Kansas City are Missouri's two largest metros, and both spill over the border, St. Louis into Illinois and Kansas City into Kansas. A clinic a short drive across the river answers to a different board, so confirm the street address before you count a site as a Missouri one. Springfield and Columbia are the next largest metros.

Questions FIU students ask
Can FIU students use a Missouri clinical site?
FIU lets online primary care students train beyond its four South Florida counties but does not address other states. With no published Missouri approval step for schools based elsewhere, that leaves FIU's Office of Clinical Education holding the deciding answer. Ask before you contact clinics.
Does Missouri's preceptor tax credit apply to NP preceptors?
No. RSMo 135.690 rewards only physicians and PAs, and only when their students are in medicine or PA programs. Nurse practitioners and nursing students fall outside it, so the credit is not a selling point for an FIU NP rotation.
Will FIU's MSN qualify me for NP licensure in Missouri?
FIU has not determined whether its program satisfies Missouri; it confirms Florida alone and asks you to contact the state's licensing agency before starting. Keep in mind too that Missouri NPs practice under a physician collaboration arrangement for their whole careers.
Can a Missouri physician precept me for FIU?
FIU's handbook allows physician preceptors even though it also says preceptors need a master's in nursing, and it notes most rotations are with NPs. FIU has not reconciled the two, so clear any physician with your course faculty first.
