Kansas checks your program at the finish line, so check FIU at the start
Kansas does not ask an out-of-state online APRN program for approval before Kansans enroll; the Kansas State Board of Nursing (KSBN) looks the program over only once its graduate seeks a Kansas APRN license. Florida International University (FIU) has made no Kansas licensure determination of its own, so compare FIU's plan of study with KSBN's checklist before you commit.

Review at licensure, not at enrollment
KSBN's guidance on out-of-state APRN programs is unusual in its timing. There is no formal step with the board before a Kansas resident starts an online program elsewhere. The scrutiny comes later, at the moment a new NP files for Kansas APRN licensure and KSBN examines the program behind the application.
That design puts the risk on you. A program that falls short of Kansas's checklist is discovered after the coursework and clinical hours are done. FIU's own disclosure does not settle the point, since its licensure page stops at Florida and leaves every other state, Kansas included, undetermined. Read the licensure disclosure and send KSBN your questions before your first semester, not after your last.

The last row is the one to resolve. FIU's two published figures sit on either side of 750, and the 770 vs 630 hours page explains the conflict. Ask your track leader and the Office of Clinical Education how many hours your plan of study will record, and keep the reply for your Kansas application.
Who may precept you in Kansas
KSBN's expectations for a Kansas preceptor come from regulation 60-17-104: an orientation to your program, a signed agreement, and Kansas APRN licensure matching the role your track prepares you for. Clinical supervision of APRN students requires that Kansas license. Your own status rests on statute 65-1124, which lets you practice as an advanced practice nursing student on an RN license that Kansas accepts; its own single-state license qualifies, and so does a multistate license. FIU's preceptor requirements apply on top.
Kansas is relaxed about faculty. Online instructors need no Kansas license, visits to students during clinicals are not a Kansas requirement, and faculty who do visit come as visitors or lay persons. FIU, by contrast, builds faculty visits on two or more clinical days into its own process, so ask your clinical faculty how that would work for a Kansas practice.
Compact, practice climate and places to search
Kansas's compact membership began in July 2019, a year after Florida's; the APRN Compact has no Kansas membership. FIU's MSN still names a current Florida RN license and is silent on a Kansas-issued multistate one, as our Florida RN license page shows. AANP lists Kansas as full practice.
Some 938,000 Kansans live in the Kansas half of metro Kansas City, and Wichita, Topeka and Manhattan follow. Four large systems are worth knowing: Stormont Vail Health; Wesley Healthcare, which HCA operates in Wichita; The University of Kansas Health System; and Ascension's Via Christi hospitals. Any of them would set its own terms and need an FIU contract, and a clinic on the Missouri side of the metro answers to Missouri's rules instead.

Does KSBN have to approve FIU before I enroll from Kansas?
KSBN sets no formal approval step before a Kansan enrolls in an online APRN program based elsewhere. KSBN reviews the program when you apply for Kansas APRN licensure. FIU's own questions still come first: whether its online tracks can run a practicum in Kansas and how it treats your RN license.
Could FIU's 630-hour handbook minimum be a problem in Kansas?
It could, for anyone admitted after March 1, 2025, because KSBN's figure for those students is 750 role-specialty hours. FIU's web pages say 770, its handbook says 630 at minimum. Get a written statement of your planned hours from FIU before you rely on either figure.
Can a Missouri preceptor in Kansas City count for a Kansas resident?
That depends on FIU first, since FIU's pages are silent on any online-track rotation beyond Florida. If FIU allows it, Missouri's rules govern a practice in Missouri. KSBN's clinical-hours check at licensure looks at the program, so keep records of every site.
I'm relocating to Wichita mid-program. What do I tell FIU?
Report it. FIU Policy 1370.001 updates your learner location only when you formally notify FIU, and that location shapes what FIU may offer you, clinical placements included. Then ask FIU's clinical office whether the practicums you have left can move to Kansas, before approaching anyone.
