Montana residents studying nursing with FIU
Montana gives graduate nursing students from other states a direct answer: its Board says RN-to-BSN and graduate programs can hold clinicals there without asking its permission. The open question sits on the Florida side. Florida International University (FIU) has not determined whether its programs meet Montana's requirements and has not said whether its online tracks may train beyond Florida.

The Board's answer for graduate and RN-to-BSN clinicals
Montana's Board of Nursing settles this in its FAQ. Out-of-state graduate programs, and RN-to-BSN programs too, may hold Montana clinicals with no sign-off from the Board. The school keeps one duty: making sure your nursing license is current and good in Montana, because the people you treat are Montana patients. For faculty, a Montana license matters only if they treat patients themselves; someone who simply talks the case through with you and your preceptor needs none.
First-license students face a stricter path. Under ARM 24.159.608, an outside prelicensure program needs a green light from the Board or its executive director before placing anyone, and must show its accreditation, explain how faculty will supervise and have Montana program directors confirm local students keep their places. None of that reaches an NP student.

Full practice across long distances
AANP classes Montana as a full practice state. Its metros are small: Billings, the biggest, had roughly 193,600 residents in the Census Bureau's 2025 estimate, with Bozeman, Missoula and Helena behind it. Drive time will shape which preceptors are realistic, and since FIU's primary care rotations run on weekdays, raise scheduling in the first conversation.
Providence runs St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula, Intermountain Health operates St. Vincent Regional Hospital in Billings, Benefis Health System is another major name, and Billings Clinic has joined with Logan Health in a single system. RN to BSN students in Montana
FIU's online RN to BSN follows its own pattern. It takes a Florida or multistate license, and FIU's current handbook suggests finding a preceptor inside your own facility: a BSN-prepared nurse, approved by faculty, at a site with a current contract with FIU's nursing college, and not on the unit where you work. FIU's 2021 information package adds that moving out of state does not waive the practicum and that out-of-state students should identify themselves to the Program Coordinator. Licensing: Montana's multistate rule and FIU's
Montana joined the compact's operating members in January 2018, and the Board's RN page is plain that nurses carrying another member state's multistate privilege need no separate Montana license. If yours is a Montana multistate license, the Board's condition for an in-state rotation is already met.
Admission is a separate test. At FIU, the MSN and DNP require an active Florida RN license, as our Florida RN license page explains. Montana sits outside the APRN Compact, so after graduation you apply for NP licensure in each state where you intend to practice.

Questions FIU students ask
Does Montana require approval for FIU's graduate clinicals?
Not from the Board, whose FAQ exempts graduate and RN-to-BSN programs from approval. The one condition is that you hold a license that works in Montana. FIU must still agree to contract with the site.
Does my FIU clinical faculty need a Montana license?
The Board ties that requirement to direct patient care. A faculty member who advises and evaluates without treating anyone falls outside it. How FIU handles faculty site visits for a distant rotation is a question for the Office of Clinical Education.
Does FIU's MSN meet Montana's NP licensure requirements?
FIU has not determined that; the only state it confirms is Florida. As FIU's licensure page advises, put the question to Montana's Board ahead of enrollment and save the reply.
If I move to Montana mid-program, what changes?
Under Policy 1370.001, FIU changes your learner location only after you formally report the move, and location affects authorization and clinical experiences. Report it promptly and settle your next site with FIU; our moving guide explains the steps.
