Studying with FIU while living in New Jersey
Millions of New Jersey residents live inside the New York and Philadelphia metros, with a dense map of clinics to consider; the harder question is whether FIU will contract with one of them. Florida International University (FIU) vouches for its licensure programs in Florida alone, has reached no conclusion on New Jersey and is silent on online-track clinicals beyond Florida.

Joint protocols and the NP who precepts you
AANP places New Jersey in its reduced practice tier. The sticking point is prescribing: an NP's authority to order drugs and devices rests on written protocols shared with a physician collaborator, so the NPs you approach all practice within that arrangement.
FIU layers its own conditions on top: specialty experience of at least a year, current licensure and certification, and a preceptor who is not family or a close friend. Details, including FIU's unresolved line on physician preceptors, are on our preceptor requirements page.
Board rules and your license
New Jersey's nursing board sits within the Division of Consumer Affairs. Its education rules in Chapter 37 of Title 13 cover accrediting programs at state-licensed institutions, and one section, 13:37-1.10(c), handles the opposite of your situation: a New Jersey school whose students train at agencies elsewhere. Nothing published there sets an approval or notice step for an outside school placing a student in New Jersey. Ask the Board directly and file its reply.
New Jersey's compact membership only began on November 15, 2021, well after Florida's. For admission, FIU's graduate programs name an active Florida RN license and never mention New Jersey multistate holders; our Florida RN license page covers it. The APRN Compact has not been adopted in New Jersey.
North Jersey, South Jersey and the shore
The New York-Newark-Jersey City metro counts roughly 7.1 million New Jersey residents and Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington roughly 1.4 million, while Trenton-Princeton and Atlantic City-Hammonton are smaller metros entirely inside the state. Big systems include RWJBarnabas Health, Atlantic Health System, Hackensack Meridian Health and Virtua Health, plus Cooper University Health Care based in Camden. They orient your search, but each writes its own student rules.
Geography can trip you up here. A clinic across the Hudson is in New York and one across the Delaware is in Pennsylvania, each governed by its own board, so confirm the address before you count it as a New Jersey site.
DNP students and the organizational mentor
FIU's post-MSN DNP works differently from the NP tracks. You propose an organizational mentor at your workplace or in the community, ideally doctorally prepared and not your usual supervisor, and sign-off comes from the DNP Program Director together with the Clinical Education Department, after which FIU holds the contract. Time at your own job counts only for work outside your normal role. Questions FIU students ask
Can I do FIU clinicals in New Jersey?
FIU has not said whether online primary care students may train outside Florida, and the New Jersey Board has published no approval step for outside schools. The Office of Clinical Education makes the call, so ask it before you contact a New Jersey practice.
Does FIU's MSN lead to APRN certification in New Jersey?
FIU has made no determination for New Jersey; its confirmation covers Florida only. It directs students aiming for a license in another state to that state's licensing agency before they start, which here means the Board of Nursing within the Division of Consumer Affairs.
Can a New Jersey DNP student use a mentor at their own hospital?
FIU allows a mentor at your place of practice, within limits: not your regular work supervisor, hours only beyond your usual duties, and sign-off from FIU's DNP leadership and clinical education staff. Confirm first that FIU accepts a mentor outside Florida.
Why does New Jersey's practice environment matter for my search?
