Mississippi and FIU's online NP tracks
In Mississippi, the office that screens nursing programs from other states is the university governing board, not the Board of Nursing, and its review can run up to three months. That sits on top of the position taken by Florida International University (FIU), which confirms its programs for Florida and has made no determination about Mississippi.

Why the review runs through IHL
Mississippi splits nursing oversight. The Board of Nursing handles practical nursing schools, while RN degree programs fall to the state's Institutions of Higher Learning board (IHL). IHL expects any outside school bringing undergraduate or graduate nursing students here for clinicals to meet Mississippi's standards. It treats a practicum on Mississippi soil as the program being physically present, which triggers a look by its Nursing Education office.
What has to line up before a Mississippi rotation
- FIU agreeing that a Mississippi site is acceptable for your track
- An IHL review, requested by the school; IHL's procedures manual suggests asking at least four months before the start
- Distance-education authorization, which IHL accepts through SARA participation (FIU takes part in NC-SARA through SREB) or a separate state route
- A signed FIU contract with the clinic, often 6-8 weeks of work for a new site
IHL also wants graduate students in advanced practice clinical courses to carry a clean, unrestricted RN license that is good in whichever state hosts the training.
Collaborative practice and who precepts
Reduced practice is AANP's label for Mississippi. Every NP in the state needs a collaborator, a Mississippi-licensed physician or dentist, under terms the Board signs off on. Any NP preceptor you recruit is practicing inside one of those relationships, and the collaborating physician can also be worth asking.
Before you lean on physicians, read FIU's own rule. The graduate handbook expects preceptors to hold a master's in nursing yet also lets physicians precept, and it notes most rotations are with NPs. Jackson, the Coast and the Memphis edge
Mississippi's larger population centers are the Jackson metro, Gulfport-Biloxi on the Gulf Coast, Hattiesburg and the Mississippi share of the Memphis metro. The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) is the name most students know. Other large systems include North Mississippi Health Services, Singing River Health System and Forrest Health, and Baptist Memorial Health Care, headquartered in Memphis, runs Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson. Each keeps its own rules for students, so read their pages rather than assuming access. A clinic on the Tennessee side of Memphis falls under Tennessee's rules instead.
Licenses: Mississippi, the compact and Florida
Mississippi and Florida both belong to the Nurse Licensure Compact. The Mississippi Board explains that nurses who keep their licenses in good standing and declare a member state as home may work in the other member states, and employers there cannot demand a remote-state license. For an in-state rotation, a Mississippi multistate license answers IHL's license expectation.
FIU's own admission rule is separate, and it names a Florida RN license for MSN and DNP applicants, as our Florida license page explains. The APRN Compact has no Mississippi enactment, which leaves NP licensure after graduation as a separate application.

Which Mississippi agency reviews out-of-state nursing clinicals?
The Nursing Education office of the IHL Board, not the Board of Nursing. IHL counts a Mississippi practicum as physical presence and checks the visiting program against the state's standards, which can take as long as three months. The school asks for the review; students do not file it themselves.
Is FIU's MSN approved for NP licensure in Mississippi?
FIU has not reached a determination for Mississippi; the one state it confirms is Florida. Its licensure page steers anyone hoping to practice in another state to that state's board before the program begins.
Does my Mississippi compact license cover a clinical rotation here?
IHL looks for an unencumbered RN license valid where the student trains, and a Mississippi multistate license is valid in Mississippi. FIU's admission rule is a different matter and still calls for a current Florida RN license.
How early should I raise Mississippi with FIU?
Early enough to fit two clocks. IHL's manual wants programs based outside Mississippi to ask for review no later than four months out, and a new FIU site contract adds its own weeks. Bring Mississippi up with the Office of Clinical Education well before the term in which you set up your first rotation.
