Wisconsin students in FIU nursing programs: approval, APRN law, preceptors
Wisconsin's Board of Nursing must approve out-of-state nursing schools, graduate programs included, and a rewritten APRN law has applied there since September 1, 2026. Florida International University (FIU) speaks only for Florida; for Wisconsin, as for every other state, its licensure page says not determined. Here is what a Wisconsin resident should confirm before counting on a local practicum.

Wisconsin's approval rule for out-of-state schools
The rule lives in the Wisconsin Administrative Code at N 1.06, and DSPS form 3067-OEE (revised April 2026) puts it bluntly: a nursing school from outside Wisconsin needs the Board's approval. The form lists practical nurse and RN programs at every level, associate through graduate, and calls out post-licensure bachelor's programs by name.
Approved schools then report on themselves periodically, using Form 3069OEE, to keep that approval. Clinical faculty and preceptors working in Wisconsin also need a Wisconsin license or another form of practice privilege there.

The APRN law that took effect September 1, 2026
2025 Wisconsin Act 17 retired the APNP title. DSPS switched existing APNP licenses over to APRN licenses and now licenses four APRN roles: NPs, nurse anesthetists, clinical nurse specialists and nurse-midwives. Going without a collaborating physician takes a separate application and a Board approval.
AANP's map, meanwhile, still shows Wisconsin as reduced practice with physician collaboration, while flagging the new law's September 2026 start. On FIU's Preceptor Request Form, expect your preceptor's license to read APRN; some will keep a physician collaborator and some may seek independent practice.

Whatever the system, your preceptor must clear FIU's preceptor standards and Wisconsin's license rule, and FIU needs a signed contract with the site before you start. New contracts are not quick (the current graduate handbook says 6-8 weeks; the 2022 preceptor manual gives other figures), so a site that already holds one saves time.
Compact licenses and FIU's Florida requirement
Wisconsin nurses have held compact licenses since 2018, though the state has not joined the APRN Compact. That multistate RN license works across compact states, but FIU's MSN and DNP still name a current Florida RN license, with no statement on multistate substitutes.
