Living in Nevada as an FIU nursing student
A Florida International University (FIU) student eyeing a Las Vegas or Reno clinic meets two Nevada rules at once: programs delivered online cannot teach clinicals in the state without Board approval, and patient care in Nevada, student care included, requires a Nevada license. FIU has not determined whether its programs meet Nevada's requirements, so its Office of Clinical Education is your first call.

Three Nevada checkpoints before any clinic
- Board approval for the programWere FIU to run any part of a program in Nevada, NAC 632.703 would have it file a report on the Board's form, show its accreditation or approval, demonstrate that it follows Nevada's nursing statutes and regulations, and send annual reports. Clinical teaching by an online program needs the Board's approval first, and FIU faculty teaching in Nevada would need Nevada licenses.

The rule treats pre-licensure, post-licensure and graduate programs alike, so its reach over FIU's NP tracks is FIU's to settle with the Board.
FIU's position for a Nevada resident
Nevada gets the same treatment as every state but Florida on FIU's professional licensure page: the BSN, MSN and DNP Nurse Anesthesia are confirmed for Florida, Nevada is left undetermined, and you are asked to check with Nevada's licensing agency before you start. The licensure disclosure page walks through that wording.
Admission to FIU's graduate NP and DNP programs hinges on a current Florida RN license. Nevada is not a compact state and has no bill pending, so the Florida license FIU requires gives no practice privilege in Nevada, and a Henderson nurse enrolled at FIU keeps two licenses. FIU does let its online primary care NP students look past Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and Monroe, but whether that stretches to Nevada is unanswered; see clinicals outside South Florida.
How precepted clinicals work under Nevada's Board
A 2005 Board practice decision frames precepted clinicals in Nevada. Faculty direct every student clinical experience; a preceptor stays on site and supervises no more than a pair of students simultaneously; faculty stay reachable by telephone; and the program hands preceptors an orientation and written objectives. FIU's own version of that hand-off, the preceptor folder, is described on the first day.
The two-student cap shapes a Nevada search for an FIU student: a preceptor already supervising two students from other schools has no room for you that term. FIU's Preceptor Request Form asks for the preceptor's days and times, so check them against those other students' schedules. AANP lists Nevada as a full practice state.
Las Vegas, Reno and the systems in between
Metro Las Vegas dwarfs the rest of the state at about 2.4 million people in the Census Bureau's 2025 estimates; the Reno metro area counts close to 579,000 and Carson City close to 59,000. In the south, examples of employers of NP preceptors include University Medical Center of Southern Nevada, an academic medical center; Sunrise Health System, part of HCA Healthcare; the Dignity Health hospitals in Henderson and Las Vegas; and The Valley Health System, operated by a Universal Health Services subsidiary. Renown Health is the northern example. An FIU rotation at any of them would need an FIU contract.
Across the borders, Arizona and Utah belong to the compact, while California stays outside it with rules of its own.

Questions FIU students ask
Has Nevada's Board cleared FIU for clinicals in the state?
Nothing shows that it has. The September 2026 list of outside schools cleared for clinical-only teaching holds pre-licensure programs only, and FIU is absent. FIU has not said whether its online NP tracks may place students outside Florida, so raise it with the Office of Clinical Education.
Does a multistate nursing license cover Nevada?
No. Because Nevada is not a Nurse Licensure Compact member, multistate licenses issued by Florida or other members give no right to practice there. Nevada nurses need a Nevada license, and FIU's MSN and DNP separately ask for a Florida one before admission.
What is NP practice like in Nevada after I graduate?
Full practice, on AANP's map, with a catch for new NPs: Schedule II prescribing waits for two years of clinical experience (or the hours equivalent) unless a physician has approved a protocol covering it. FIU has not determined whether its programs meet Nevada's requirements, so check with the Board before counting on FIU's MSN there.
I'm moving to Las Vegas mid-program. What should I do first?
File the change of address with FIU first: Policy 1370.001 keeps your old location on record until you formally report a move. Then get the Office of Clinical Education's view on a Nevada practicum, and apply for the Nevada RN license the Board expects for patient care there.
